“Music, because of its specific and far-reaching metaphorical powers, can name the unnamable and communicate the unknowable.”
–Leonard Bernstein, The Unanswered Question: Six Talks at Harvard by Leonard Bernstein

Why learn music? The advantages of learning music seem immeasurable to those who have reaped its benefits. Learning to play a musical instrument instills core human values such as discipline, self-expression, analytical thinking, creativity, and confidence associated with the ability to learn a special skill. In another testimony for the power of music education, Albert Einstein, the physicist said, "The theory of relativity occurred to me by intuition, and music is the driving force behind this intuition. My parents had me study the violin from the time I was six. My new discovery is the result of musical perception." These values, along with the principle of music as a universal language and as the most expressive and abstract art form, make an important argument for music lessons as a supplement to a well-rounded education for any student.
Why learn the oboe? The beauty of the oboe displays itself differently in different oboists--the nature of the small double reed combined with the personal embouchure of the player makes the oboe sound uniquely individual to the instrumentalist. For centuries, composers have taken advantage of the oboe's soloistic qualities, as much orchestral and band music feature solos for the oboe, in addition to the oboe's relatively wide and unmistakeably beautiful repertoire in solo and chamber music genres. In oboe lessons, specific content may vary depending on level, but the basic structure for all levels consists of three parts--fundamentals (tone production, articulation, technique), method training (etudes/method book exercises/duets) and music (solo and ensemble repertoire). Reed making is also incorporated into lessons. As oboists know, great reeds are necessary for great oboe playing!
Why learn from me? As a teacher, I strive to be a great model of strong technical, musical and beautiful oboe playing. I also hope be an example of professionalism and strong work ethic while maintaining a safe and empathetic learning environment--understanding each student's needs in order to achieve their personal musical goals. I seek to help students develop individual practice schedules that make practicing enjoyable and efficient while, most importantly, fitting into the busy daily schedule of the 21st century student. I believe a genuine enthusiasm for music, combined with an equally and openly genuine enthusiasm for the progress of the student leads to musical successes. Recently, a teacher explained to me that musicians, specifically oboists, are given both the task and the privilege to tell profound and important stories through music. The oboe is uniquely profound in its ability to tell musical stories, and I seek to encourage my students not only to gain technical proficiency on the instrument, but to find confidence and personal expression in their roles as musicians, musical story tellers and creative individuals.
